Book

Research shows that most K-12 systems are not adequately preparing the youth for college, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. This book is inspired by the need to address this barrier through extra in- and out-of-school support services as part of a college readiness program in high school STEM curriculum or continuous support during the college freshman year. Academic Coaching for Success in STEM frames academic subject coaching as a process of facilitating personalized learning, relationally motivating students to be independent learners through mentorship, and developing problem-solving skills and high performance attitudes that lead to success in the specific subject the student is finding challenging. In this respect, academic coaching is more than tutorial help. The text serves as a comprehensive guide for STEM academic support services for tutorial service centers, and tutor training in pre-college and college settings. The book discusses in detail the roles and qualities of a tutor as an academic coach, best tutoring practices, and tutor training. As a whole, the text explores both the broad and micro views of why personalized academic support can be integral to the success of students aspiring for STEM careers.
